Gyrfalcon  (Falco rusticolus)

We saw this gyrfalcon on December 2, 2007, in exactly the same spot as the one below. Could it be the same bird?


Gyrfalcons are often found in South Dakota in winter, usually near the Missouri River. This is the first one we've seen in our part of the state. Near Orman Dam, Butte County.

We found this juvenile a couple of miles west of Hayes, South Dakota.
